Ways I'm Giving Back

1

Big Brothers Big Sisters and RBC Race for the Kids September 20, 2014

This is me on September 20, 2014 in Brooklyn's Prospect Park for the 10th Annual RBC Race for the Kids part of the Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play.

This event Helped BBBS of NYC raise $1,000,000 to support their goal of ensuring that all children achieve success in life. I was one of the volunteers that help with the race, giving directions and managing the race flow. Total Volunteer time was only 5hours, 1hour orientation and 4hours for the race.  I met some great people, had a great time and contributed to a great cause.

I set a goal to collect over 50 coats for New York Cares 26th Annual Coat Drive.  I ask friends, family, coworkers, and my social media friends to donate if they can. I set up an email for everyone to contact me so I can set up a pick up or schedule a drop off.  I figured the above will hopefully get me to my personal goal and add to the overall goal for NYC Cares.  What happened was my friends, family, social media friends and strangers came together and help me EXCEED my goal by doing some of the following

  • Donating

  • Spreading the Word

  • Promoting on their Social Sites

  • Chance 11 Lounge allowed me to use their location on two dates in the Month of December for a Drop off Location and Two of my friends Promoted and Hosted the coat drive with me.

  • One of my Social Media Friends got inspired and decide to collect coats and give them away to people in need in his area. He had 49coats left over so he gave them to me to add to my coat drive

So far we were able to collect over 200 coats. What a difference we can make together. 200 plus New Yorkers will be warm just from our small efforts

With our busy lives, it can be hard to find time to   volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Just like many of you I have a hectic schedule but this year and going forward I decided to dedicate a few hours of my time to some great charities and causes.  I also wanted to spread the word and recruit friends, family, coworkers and  my social network family to do the same. Join me #giveback

Food Bank for NYC

Jan - Dec 2015

January 14th, 2015 I volunteered a few hours of my time to Foodbank NYC.  I unloaded the food trucks, set up stations, and gave out groceries to families in need at PS 360 in the Bronx.  This is one of the high need projects that Food Bank NYC is doing called Meals for Minds. Meals for Minds makes a direct impact on the lives of hungry children and families in our communities with montly grocery distrubutions.  Each Child/Family leaves the pantry with at least 30lbs of groceries, enough food for 25 meals.  If you are interested please log on to volunteer.foodbanknyc.org to volunteer.

I will be there next month

Friday May 8th, I volounteered a few hours at the foodbank in Harlem for the Shop and stock with seniors.  We assisted seniors of the pantry by checking out their bags, bagging groceries, and greeting them with a smile.  This pantry provides more than 40,000 meals a month.  It was great experience and I met some cool people.  If you would like to join me next time please email me at sammysgivebackprobject@gmail.com

#TakeCareOfBrooklyn initiative aims to help decrease the number of local hungry Brooklyn residents through the collaborative efforts of local volunteers & organizations. #TakeCareOfBrooklyn started as a simple way to highlight charitable work and/or good deeds done for the betterment of the community.  Saturday May 9th, 2015 Volunteers prepared, pack and distributed brown lunch bags with a goal to feed 500 Brooklyn residents in need.  We exceeded the goal and was able to feed over 700 people that day.  It was an amazing experience.  If you would like more information on this organization please email them TakeCareOfBrooklyn@Gmail.com
